Employment FAQs

How do I get an application?
Application packets can be downloaded, using the link below. Complete the application checklist and mail to the HR department, using the mailing label at the bottom of the checklist.

I have heard that the driving record is pretty in depth, is that true?
Yes, Rural/Metro wants to ensure that the most qualified personnel operate their vehicles.  In the
application packet, you will find a copy of the policy, along with the points assessed for any citations,
which may be on a record.  Serious infractions may count against you as far back as seven years, if
they are serious enough.  We encourage you to be truthful in your application, as all records are reviewed prior to being allowed to continue to Phase II of our process.

How will the partnership address who is in charge of on-scene patient care?
Both agencies have agreed that the first agency on scene will take charge of patient care.  The Salem Fire Department will manage the scene, allowing the medical responders to take care of the patients.  Should there be a disagreement on-scene, regarding patient treatment, the use of the protocol is the first step, and then concerns will be delegated to On-Line Medical Control.  At all times, the course of action which is best for the patient will be taken.  The Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement process will also address any clinical matters in need of review by request of anyone in the chain of patient care; First Responder, Transport Agency, or Hospital.

  How are uniforms provided?
Employees are given uniforms based on status.  Full-time employees receive three and part-time employees receive two.  All employees will receive a coat and a stipend for boots.

Is continuing education available for recertification?

Joint continuing education will be provided in conjunction with Salem Fire Department.

Is there opportunity for advancement within Rural/Metro®?

Field Training Officer Status, Supervisor, and Management Training are available.  Positions are also available via transfer to other operations across the country.

What kind of staffing is available in Salem?

Four units are on a 24-hour schedule, and two units are on a12-hour peak staffing seven days per week.  The Basic Life Support unit will work 40 hours per week, independent of the 911 system staffing.

What does Rural/Metro think about working while going to school?

We encourage all of our staff to continue their education.  Our goal is to provide a quality workplace where you can begin a career and grow as you obtain your goals.  If you are looking for experience before moving on to another career, such as firefighting, we welcome you and will offer a 24-hour unit on a school schedule.  This schedule allows you to take courses either on a Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday pattern, while working when you have days off of school.  For those people who have made it to the final stages paramedic school that require Monday-Friday course study, we recommend part-time hours to allow for appropriate study time and a chance to rest.

What kind of Sick/Vacation Benefits are offered?

Rural/Metro® offers one week of sick leave per year to each employee.  Employees also receive two weeks of vacation time per year, increasing based on your time with the company.

What happens to your PTO time, if it is not used?

It may be rolled over up to one week per year for the first six months.  After those first six months, the time is lost.

  What is the pay schedule?

Paychecks are mailed to your residence every two weeks.  We encourage participation in the direct deposit program to ensure funds are available without complications of the mail.

  When will raises happen?

Rural/Metro® employees are given performance evaluations on an annual basis.  These evaluations are the basis for increases in salary.

Are there limits to the health insurance offered by Rural/Metro®?

Yes, during the first year, new employees are limited to the Basic EPO and Healthcare  Spending Plan.  After that timeframe, employees will have the option for all of the plans.
